The Blandford Plus neighbourhood area was approved by North Dorset District Council (NDDC) on 17/2/2014. The neighbourhood area consists of the areas occupied by the parishes of Blandford Town, Blandford St Mary and Bryanston.

A neighbourhood plan for the area was developed in 2014/15/16 and submitted for examination in July 2016. It was then examined in the first half of 2017 with a public hearing being held on 10th April 2017. The examiner concluded that, provided her recommendations in her report were followed, the plan could proceed to a referendum. Her recommendations were:

  • Delete Policy 1 - Proposed major development to the north and east of Blandford.
  • Delete Policy 10.4 - Proposed designation of Crown Meadows as a 'local green space'.

Soon after this the NDDC Local Plan became 'out of date' due to NDDC announcing a shortfall in the five year land supply. Blandford Plus then wrote to the 'Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government' (DHCLG) asking him to intervene.

In response the Department commissioned a report in November 2017 and the subsequent findings were that, in view of the examiner's recommendations, the neighbourhood plan should be withdrawn. This was duly carried out on the 16th May 2018. In addition they recommended working with NDDC to take account of their 'Issues and Options' review and with prospective developers to develop a new plan.

Blandford Plus have therefore been doing this and have now announced a new neighbourhood plan, version 2. The main areas addressed by this plan are:

  • Settlement boundaries to include:
    • Dorchester Hills development
    • St Mary's Hill development
    • Land to Wards Drive
  • Housing site allocations - options:
    • N and NE Blandford
    • Lower Bryanston & Blandford St Mary F2
    • Lower Bryanston
    • Blandford St Mary F2
  • Employment land allocations
  • Primary/Secondary schools
  • Community facilities
    • Blandford St Mary Community Hall
  • Town centre
  • Green infrastructure network
  • Local green spaces
  • Conservation area
    • Crown Meadows protection
  • Design management
    • Blandford Forum
    • Blandford St Mary

In North Dorset, neighbourhood plans already exist for Bourton, Gillingham and Shillingstone. And examiners have been appointed for the Fontmell Magna, Hazelbury Bryan, Pimperne and Sturminster Newton neighbourhood plans.
